Multiple lithium-ion batteries charging on a shelf at the Stacyville Fire Department caught fire Tuesday, May 21, leading to damage at the station and an injured firefighter, newscentermaine.com reported.
Six fire departments responded to assist Stacyville firefighters. They were able to quickly knock down the fire, but the building and several pieces of apparatus were damaged, the report said.
The state fire marshal’s office determined that the fire originated on a shelf inside the station where multiple lithium-ion batteries were charging, according to the fire marshal’s press release. Officials said it’s considered accidental.
A firefighter was taken to a hospital, treated, and released for a non-fire-related leg injury, the release stated.
Stacyville Fire Department released a statement on its Facebook page: Hi everyone just let you all know, yes we did have a fire in the fire station last night and we managed to get the trucks out and at the shop to see how much damage is done on them. As for the fire station, it’s a loss. There’s too much damage inside.
