TIA Issued for NFPA 1981 SCBA Standard

According to a Tentative Interim Amendment to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1981, Standard on Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services, (2013 ed.), effctive September 15, 2013, SCBA manufacturers will be able to manufacture and certify SCBA to NFPA 1981 (2007 ed.) until February 28, 2014.

Originally, manufacturers were required to stop shipping SCBA complaint with the 2007 revision of NFPA 1981 on August 31, 2013.

The reason for the extension is that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has requested a six month extension because of delays in CBRN testing.

Important to remember is that this extension has no bearing on timeframes for establishing compliance with the NFPA 1981 (2013 ed.). SCBA manufacturers expect to receive approval to begin manufacturing their products to the NFPA 1981 (2013 ed.) prior to February 28, 2014.

5.5 Air-Pak SCBA
Responding to the need for a smaller, lighter SCBA, Scott Safety created the new 5.5 cylinders. By increasing the pressure in the cylinder to 5500psig, Scott Safety was able to maintain the traditional form, durability and capacity of standard cylinders while providing more than a 10% reduction in weight and reduced profile.

The 5.5 Air-Pak SCBA are available in 30-minute, 45-minute, 60-minute and 75-minute durations and compatible with the Air-Pak 75 and Air-Pak NxG7 SCBA. To facilitate integration into the fire service, Scott Safety worked with leading manufacturers to ensure the cylinders work with existing seats and brackets already in the market.
