WATCH | FDNY’s Decontamination Shower Apparatus

The video and text were posted by Skyler Fire on YouTube Friday, April 12.

FDNY has three Decontamination Shower Apparatus (DSA). The DSAs are on a 2006 Mack MR cab with Ferrara bodies. DSAs are called whenever an Incident Commander deems its response is necessary.

DSAs are intended to be used for technical decontamination.

This includes the removal of:

  • Nuisance contaminants such as construction dusts and polluted water (black water diving).
  • Contaminants that are not immediately life threatening such as asbestos, PCBs, and biological contaminants (anthrax, bloodborne and airborne pathogens).
  • Contaminants that have potentially exposed patients where the patients are not displaying extreme signs or symptoms. These patients may or may not have been exposed but medical transport can be delayed until technical decontamination procedure is performed.
