The city of Hartselle says two firefighters were taken to the hospital after a fire apparatus they were in hit a house and tree Wednesday afternoon, whnt.com reported.

Here’s what the city of Hartselle posted on Facebook about it:

“This afternoon Engine 2 was returning from a fire call when the driver experienced a medical emergency and was not able to control the vehicle. The vehicle veered into oncoming traffic on Highway 36 West in front of Dollar General. The lieutenant in the passenger seat was able to grab the steering vehicle and get the vehicle out of oncoming traffic, however, the engine left the roadway on the west bound side and struck the corner of an unoccupied house and continued moving and struck a large pine tree behind the house.

“Both firefighters were transported for medical treatment. The lieutenant in the passenger seat was also able to engage the air brake.

“He received a cut on his hand and required stitches. The driver is going to be OK and is having tests run now.”

The Hartselle Police Department said the cause of the medical event is unknown at this time but it is possible it was heat-related, the report said.
