WATCH: Colorado Springs (CO) FD Completes Two Complex Technical Rescues Hours Apart

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to two technical rescue calls, the fire department said in a Facebook post.

“These types of calls are not a common occurrence but our crews are highly trained and ready to respond to these complex incidents.

“The first call came in around 4 p.m. for a car that had gone over the side of a cliff at Cheyenne Canyon. CSFD High Angle and Heavy Rescue crews responded. Firefighters had to utilize rope systems in order to reach the patients. The terrain was slippery and steep which added an extra challenge. They were able to get down to the car and stabilize it before extricating two patients. The vehicle extrication entailed the use of hydraulic tools to remove the vehicle’s roof. Because of the training our firefighters have, a rescue that would have lasted well into the night was safely completed in an hour and a half.

“Crews received a second call just before 10:30 p.m. of a car that had gone off the road and into a drainage culvert. Crews hiked down to the patient to assess injuries while other firefighters worked to use the ladder truck to hoist a basket down to the patient. Ropes and the ladder truck were able to reach the patient and safely bring them to the same level as the ambulance so they could be transported to a local hospital.”
