Pierce Manufacturing has developed a Contender Multi Cab commercial pumper, delivering its first to Big Horn Fire District No. 4, serving the communities of Big Horn County, Otto, Burlington and Emblem, Wyo.

The new cab, built on a Kenworth T300, features seating for four rearward facing firefighters in the crew cab area, the most seating for any on-piece commercial chassis, according to Pierce.

The additional heating and air conditioning systems offer an environment for firefighter rehabilitation from heat exhaustion and exposure to freezing conditions, according to the maker. It also affords firefighters room to easily put on or remove turnout gear. A recessed step is located behind the door, protecting it from snow, sleet and rain.

“The Contender Multi Cab is a seamless, one-of-a-kind crew cab for the fire industry,” said Jeff Resch, Pierce vice president of sales. “It not only improves communication, visibility and airflow, it provides a safe environment for firefighters, protecting them from the elements, traffic, noise and confusion at the fire scene. With its increased interior space, we expect the Multi Cab to be the right answer for a lot of departments, including Big Horn.”

The Contender Multi Cab features an enclosed top-mount pump panel, Husky12 foam system, Hercules compressed air foam system, a front bumper discharge, booster reel at the rear, two discharges on the right side and two speed lays.

“One of our biggest concerns with more than 640 square miles in the district is getting volunteer firefighters to the scene and having a place available for them to rehab,” said J.R. “Butch” Krause, Big Horn Fire District No. 4’s fire chief. “The Contender Multi Cab helps tremendously on both counts. We couldn’t be more excited to add this new fire truck to our department.”

Pierce Manufacturing, based in Appleton, Wis., is a subsidiary of Oshkosh Truck Corporation and a leading North American manufacturer of custom fire apparatus.
