Ocean Springs (MS) FD Acquires Two New Pumpers, Rescue Boat

The Ocean Springs Fire Department celebrated its two new pumpers Wednesday, May 22, wlox.com reported.

Officials said the new apparatus, which cost around $600,000 each, are more compact, making it easier to get around the city, according to the report.

The two older rigs that are being replaced will be placed on reserve, the report said.

Ocean Springs Fire Department Acquires New Boat

Ocean Springs announced in April the acquisition of a new rescue boat to enhance its emergency response capabilities.

The new addition will significantly bolster the fire department’s ability to respond to water-related emergencies swiftly and effectively. The 24-foot aluminum boat was custom-built by Long Beach Custom Boats. Equipped with the latest technology and designed to navigate various water bodies, including rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, this boat will enable firefighters and rescue teams to provide critical assistance during water rescues, search and rescue missions, and other emergencies.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen for the investment in our fire department which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the safety and security of our community for years to come,” said Chief Derek McCoy. 

Key features of the new rescue boat include:

•    State-of-the-art electronics including side scan sonar technology which will help the OSFD dive team in locating and recovering victims and evidence. 

•    Onboard fire pump and waterway that will assist the department in mitigating any fire-related emergencies.

•    Advanced navigation and communication systems for improved coordination and response times.

•    Specialized rescue equipment such as life rafts, throw bags, and medical supplies to aid in swift and safe rescues.

•    Increased capacity to accommodate multiple passengers, ensuring the safety of both victims and rescue personnel during operations.

This new boat underscores the fire department’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents and visitors of Ocean Springs. With the growing importance of water safety and the increasing frequency of water-related emergencies, having the right tools and resources is paramount.
