Montgomery County (Md.) Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) has signed a contract with Crimson Fire Inc. for 36 multi-function pumpers. The order is worth more than $11.2 million.
MCFRS had previously contracted with the now defunct Elite Fire Apparatus in Tilleda, Wis., for 37 pumpers in January 2007, but the deal was cancelled in November 2007 after the department received just one $435,000 pumper.
After Elite shut down operations, its assets were purchased by Wolverine Fire Apparatus, headquartered in Michigan, which is currently manufacturing apparatus in the Wisconsin plant. MCFRS went back out to bid on the remaining apparatus after canceling with Elite.
“Crimson Fire was the successful awardee in a competitive process initiated in March of this year to complete work on at least 36 fire department pumpers,” said MCFRS Fire Chief Tom Carr.
The contract, which is expected to be filled in about a year, will allow the department to replace a significant portion of the fleet that serves the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
The new fire apparatus, which will all be identical, will be built on previously purchased Spartan Gladiator LFD cabs and chassis with extreme duty interiors. The apparatus will all have 2007 emission compliant Cummins ISM 400-hp engines and Allison 4000 series transmissions.
Other features will include Hale Qmax 1,500-gpm pumps with Hale CAFSPro compressed air foam systems, which will be computer operated and automated; Crimson custom SE series bodies with tubular aluminum construction; 750-gallon tanks with 25-gallon foam cells; Onan 7,500-watt diesel-powered generators; and multiple pre-connects with dual supply beds, pre-piped deck guns and pre-connected personal portable master streams.
