Meet Tommy, Baltimore’s (MD) First Diesel Fire Boat

It’s taken three years, but Tommy has arrived at his new home!

Indeed. A piece of Baltimore firefighting history is now on full display at the Fire Museum of Maryland in Lutherville.

Tommy—the city’s first diesel fire boat, named in honor of former Baltimore mayor Thomas D’alesandro Jr.—was commissioned in 1956 and stayed in service until 2015. A portion of it was preserved, and volunteers have been working to restore it.

“It’s a perfect fit,” a Facebook post reads. “The fireboat Tommy has now been officially installed in the front of our Museum! Visitors can now come and take a look at the exterior. Our next step is restoration, which will take quite some time. And fundraising is always an issue. We welcome donations here.”
