A Mansfield fire apparatus “sustained significant damage” after being hit by a tractor-trailer while responding to another crash on I-495 near Norton early Sunday morning, according to officials.

Around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, officials said, the fire department’s Engine 33 was responding to an accident before Exit 27 southbound on the highway in Norton when a tractor-trailer hit it. The tractor-trailer did not stop after hitting the fire apparatus.

The engine, which was parked sideways on the road to protect the responding officials, suffered substantial damage to the passenger side windshield, door and front. No injuries were reported in the accident, or in the accident firefighters were responding to, officials said.

The only known details of the tractor-trailer are the white trailer unit with damage to the front driver’s side of the tractor portion. Police and fire officials did not respond immediately to requests for additional information.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information on the tractor-trailer is asked to contact Massachusetts State Police at 508-543-8550.
