A new $1.2 million ladder truck purchased for the Smithfield Fire Department is too tall to fit in any of the town’s existing stations, valleybreeze.com reported. It is temporarily being kept at the North Providence Public Safety Complex.

The ladder truck was bought with Smithfield’s future fire station in mind, but that delayed station is still many months from being built, the report said.

A Smithfield fire official said the station will probably be built in 2025, and that North Providence officials are being kind to allow them to keep it in the neighboring town for now, according to the report.

North Providence currently has a spare truck that’s out for service. Once it’s back in a week or so there won’t be room for the Smithfield apparatus, the report said.

The Smithfield fire official said he expects that they’ll build some sort of temporary spot to shelter it at the Log Road fire station.
