Rosenbauer ARFF Gets Design Award

Rosenbauer’s Panther Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle has received a gold prize in the International Design Excellence Awards in the United States competition.

The Panther is one of 35 projects out of 1,517 submitted that received first prize rankings. Its design was created in teamwork with the Vienna-based innovation company, Spirit Design, and won other honors over the past two years.

The Panther was introduced in June 2005 at Interschutz in Hannover, Germany, the world’s largest fire industry trade fair. During the fair, four Panther vehicles were ordered by Dubai International Airport.

The International Design Excellence Awards, first given in 1980, are presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America.

New Fire Service Web Site Starts Up

A new Web site – Fire Department Network News – was launched in October, billing itself as the first on-line anchored news source for the fire service.

“We have an anchored newscast, similar to what you would see on TV, except it’s on the Internet,” said Karen Batista, the company’s general manager. “We look at ourselves as a news magazine when it comes to the video. It’s more special interest stories.”

The Web site – FDNNTV.com – also offers video reviews of apparatus and equipment, as well as text of daily breaking news headlines.

Batista said the venture has received “excellent reviews from the firefighting community” and additional staff are being hired sooner than expected. All stories, she said, are reported and filmed by professionals who have experience in the news media.

The company is based in Ontario, Calif., but she said reporting crews will be set up in other parts of the country as well.
