Kelly Joins Fire Apparatus As Publisher
Robert H. Kelly, a successful magazine executive, has joined the staff of Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment as publisher.
The announcement was made by Kathryn Jorgensen, who succeeded her husband, C. Peter Jorgensen, as publisher after his death Sept. 25. She has taken the title of president and will oversee the editorial and production sides of the magazine from its Vermont office.
Kelly, who graduated from Iona College with a B.S. degree, started his career in advertising sales with the Jorgensens at the weekly newspaper publishing company they owned in suburban Boston.
His 25-year consumer magazine career included management and sales positions at Ladies’ Home Journal, Money magazine, BusinessWeek and Kiplinger’s. He will concentrate on advertising sales and marketing for Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment, which will continue its editorial focus of giving emergency equipment buyers information they need.
Kelly said he looks forward to meeting fire industry leaders and will join the sales and editorial staff at trade shows and conferences. He will work from New Rochelle, N.Y., where he lives with his wife and three children.
Ferrara Calls FDNY Contract Significant
Ferrara Fire Apparatus President and CEO Chris Ferrara issued a statement in December on his company’s breakthrough aerial contract with the New York City Fire Department, calling it significant.
“New York will certainly be a tough proving ground, but our engineers and craftsmen are always up to the challenge,” he said. “We have had a great business relationship with FDNY for years and our vehicles have served them well.”
The three-year contract to build 20 rear-mount aerials with 100-foot steel ladders was awarded in October, but purchase orders were not issued until December. While Ferrara has 20 apparatus in the FDNY fleet, it is the first time in decades that the city has purchased aerials not made by Seagrave.
FDNY officials said in November that the Ferrara aerial contract could be extended for additional orders.
The apparatus are designed around the Ferrara LP-102, a low-profile rear-mount aerial ladder, Chris Ferrara said. The new aerial trucks will be built on Ferrara custom chassis, featuring a newly designed stainless steel split-tilt cab, a four-section rear mount aerial ladder and a stainless steel body, he said.
Having a narrow width, tight turning radius and low overall height, the trucks will be built to accommodate the congested streets of New York and easily fit in FDNY’s many historic fire stations, according to Ferrara.
The aerial contract, he said, “demonstrates the commitment to our core philosophy of building heavy duty, highly customized fire apparatus.”
