Cosumnes (CA) FD Takes Bold Step to Make Response Faster and Safer

The Cosumnes Fire Department made the following Facebook post recently:

Seeing the lights and hearing the sirens as you drive down the road can be stressful. Someone needs help and every second counts. In May, the Cosumnes Fire Department took a bold step to make its responses faster and safer for everyone.

Cosumnes CSD and the city of Elk Grove, California are piloting LYT.emergency – a cloud-based solution designed to improve roadway safety and travel times for first responders. Using the emergency vehicle’s GPS location, LYT.emergency provides green lights to clear the way and protect first responders as they cross each intersection, without majorly disrupting the normal flow of traffic.

Thanks to Measure E, the department is using this technology at 43 signals across Elk Grove along Laguna Boulevard, Bond Road, and Elk Grove Boulevard. In the coming months, the department will determine if this technology helps first responders arrive safer and quicker.

Chief Felipe Rodríguez expressed his enthusiasm for the trial, stating, “We are pleased to partner with the city of Elk Grove on this Measure E project to improve emergency response times. We are confident that these resources will improve community safety and travel times for first responders.”

Timothy Menard, CEO and founder of LYT, emphasized the importance of reliable and effective technology, stating, “In emergencies, where every second counts, roads have experienced more congestion due to return to office trends and continued population growth. The need to implement and maintain reliable preemption technology is paramount. It’s not just about facilitating quicker response times for our emergency responders; it’s about saving lives and prioritizing the safety and security of residents.”
