Oshkosh Striker ARFFs Sent To Portugal

The Airport Products Group of the Oshkosh Corporation has delivered five Oshkosh Striker aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) vehicles to Portugal, the first of their kind in Europe. The vehicles, purchased by ANA (Aeroportos de Portugal SA), were accepted during a Jan. 24 ceremony.

Portugal has been a long-time Oshkosh customer, but these are the first Striker units bought by the agency, and they are first Striker units delivered in Europe.

The vehicles will be stationed in three airports, including Lisbon Airport – the main international gateway to the country, which recently opened a second terminal dedicated to domestic flights.

ANA chose the Striker ARFF vehicle for many reasons, including its advanced TAK-4 independent suspension system for unmatched on and off-road performance, according to Oshkosh. ANA also selected the High-Flow, Low-Attack (HFLA) bumper turret. Designed to serve as a primary turret, the HFLA allows the operator greater visibility when fighting an aircraft fire.

“Our ability to provide the world’s most technologically advanced and innovative aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles, plus around-the-clock local support, were important selection factors by ANA,” said Mike Crowe, Oshkosh Corporation Airport Products Group president. “We’re very excited to introduce the Striker vehicle to Europe and provide a platform for future growth.”

Because the Striker ARFF vehicle delivers fast-response acceleration, unmatched visibility and triple-agent fire fighting capabilities, the company said it is particularly well suited for expanding and innovative facilities such as Lisbon Airport.

Oshkosh said the Striker vehicle also features tremendous forward, upward and lateral visibility; all-wheel drive; a low center of gravity for stability on slopes up to 30 degrees; the ability to climb a 50 percent grade; an impressively tight turning radius; a rear-mounted engine; and a wide range of model choices, including 4×4, 6×6 or 8×8 axle configurations.

Oshkosh Corporation, based in Oshkosh, Wis., and the parent company of Pierce Manufacturing, designs and builds specialty trucks and truck bodies and access equipment for the defense, fire and emergency, concrete placement and refuse hauling markets.
