The SafeGuard Transport cot-mounted ambulance restraint, which was introduced last year, has been recognized by two medical services journals.
The Transport, according to SafeGuard, is the first cot-mounted restraint system able to transport children of a wide range of sizes, from 22 to 100 pounds.
It was one of the 2007 Hot Products identified by the Journal of Emergency Services and was selected by Emergency Medical Services magazine as a 2007 Expo Top Pick and a 2007 Readers Choice Top 100 Pick, according to the manufacturer.
The Children’s Hospital in Colorado, the fourth-ranked pediatric hospital in the U.S., tested the product Sept. 29 in ambulances while moving 185 patients to a new location.
Karen Percell, clinical coordinator for the Flight for Life Colorado team, was responsible for the SafeGuard Transport restraints on the day of the move. “The restraint system was simple to use, easy to clean and comfortable, making the move an occasion of smiles and fun for our patients,” she said.
The SafeGuard Transport restraint folds out on an ambulance cot and moves with the backrest to accommodate multiple positions from horizontal to 70 degrees, allowing easy access to the child. One operation tightens the harness and adjusts the height, securing the child within seconds in a 5-point restraint, according to the manufacturer.
The Transport is lightweight and stows in space-limited storage areas.
