When the Beloit Fire Department, Beloit, Wis., went shopping for a new heavy rescue, they found just what they were looking for from Hackney Emergency Vehicles.
The Beloit Fire Department is part of the Stateline Technical Rescue Response Team, serving South Central Wisconsin and North Central, Ill.
A primary factor for selecting the Hackney rescue was its drop/pinch frame technology. The design allows more storage on a smaller wheelbase.
The new rescue is built on a Spartan custom, six-occupant cab and chassis with a 55 degree cramp angle and a 200-inch wheelbase.
Key features include a 73-inch high x 42-inch wide x 40-inch deep rear compartment for hydraulic tool deployment and an upper ladder tunnel for 14-foot and 24-foot ladders.
The unit also has an on-board air compressor, skirt-mounted, slide-out Speedi-Dri hopper, transverse tunnels for stokes, backboards, rescue tripod, combo “A” ladder and miscellaneous long tools, removable poly storage boxes, 36″ deep full height slide-out tool board, full length awning and upper body flood lights.
Of particular importance to the department was the unique installation of the Onan 35,000-watt, 125-amp pto generator. Heavily salted roads in Wisconsin typically destroy under-body mounted generators, but Hackney installs the entire system inside the left front compartment, protecting it from all corrosive environments.
The breaker panel, gauges and other electrical controls are easily accessed and fully visible day or night. A refrigerator and air hose reel are installed above the generator.
Located inside the extended front bumper is a 9,000-pound portable winch, accessible through a hinged, drop-down door integral to the bumper. The winch can be operated from this location or moved to side- and rear-mounted receiver locations, all rated at 10,000-pound capacity.
The recessed roof is a work zone that includes left and right side storage compartments and a compartment across the forward section.
Between the lateral forward compartment and the front of the body is a storage area for the nested NightScan light tower. For additional lighting, 900-watt MagnaFire flood lights are located around the full perimeter, including one on the front brow, two lights on the upper right and left sides of the body and one on the upper rear. The unit also has two removable tripod flood lights on the left rear body.
Cribbing is stored behind a hinged door on the floor of the No. 2 compartment. Above the cribbing storage is a deep slide-out drawer rated at 600 pounds for air bags and related equipment. The compartment configuration is rounded out with SCBA bottle storage tubes, slide-out trays and adjustable shelves.
The unit was sold by $298,392.
