French Fire Brigade Buys 80 ZOLL AutoPulse Pumps

A French Fire Brigade has purchased 80 ZOLL AutoPulse, non-invasive cardiac support pumps for each of its rescue vehicles.

The $1.1 million contract with Service Departmental D’Incendie et de Secours (SDIS 95) of Val d’Oise, is the largest deployment of the ZOLL equipment to Europe, according to Chelmsford, Mass.-based ZOLL Medical Corporation, a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions.

“We’re extremely pleased that this suburban Paris fire department recognizes the importance of delivering consistent, high-quality chest compressions in helping to save the lives of [sudden cardiac arrest] victims,” said Richard A. Packer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL. “AutoPulse can achieve high levels of circulation to the heart and to the brain because of the unique, consistent chest compressions it generates.”

Under the terms of the agreement, SDIS 95 has taken delivery of 34 units, and expects the balance of the order to be filled during calendar year 2008. In early deployments of the CPR device, the fire brigade has reported delivering four SCA patients to the hospital alive.

The human toll from SCA is alarming with more than 1 million deaths occurring annually worldwide, according to ZOLL.  Currently, only about 5 percent of victims survive. SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart’s function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs.

AutoPulse helps provide consistent, uninterrupted chest compressions, which are called for in 2005 American Heart Association and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

The AutoPulse is an automated, portable device with an easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand that squeezes a wider area of the chest in a consistent, uninterrupted “hands-free” manner, improving blood flow to the heart and brain during cardiac arrest, according to ZOLL.

To date, approximately 2,500 AutoPulse units have been deployed in hospitals and emergency services worldwide, according to ZOLL.

With products for pacing, defibrillation, circulation, ventilation, and fluid resuscitation, ZOLL provides a comprehensive set of technologies, including Real CPR Help and See Thru CPR. The company sells products in more than 140 countries.
