St. Clair Shores — One of St. Clair Shores’ three fire stations is closed to personnel this week as it is being remediated for mold, the fire chief said.

Fire Chief James Piper said Station Two on Greater Mack north of 9 Mile, which is in the southern part of the city, closed Monday for the remediation. He said some equipment is remaining at the station, but the station’s crew and the main vehicles have relocated to the central station ― or Station One ― which is at 26700 Harper Avenue.

Piper said Station One is only about a mile and a half north from Station Two. He said the crew is still responding to the same calls and noted that parts of Station Two’s district are actually closer to Station One.

“Realistically, the citizens won’t notice a difference,” he said.

He said the department is hoping that the station will re-open by the end of the week, but it will depend on the remediation work and subsequent testing.

Piper said the fire station recently had its floor done. While workers were moving some of the furniture in late June, a piece of wood panel came loose. As they were putting it back in place, they saw mold. A company then tested the facility.

Piper said the station had “the common household molds that you would find due to water damage.” He said there was a gap where the roof and sidewall come together, which allowed water to intrude.

The crew at Station Two is now sharing space with the personnel at Station One, which Piper said is a larger station.

“The crew is still together,” he said. “They’re still operating the same. It’s just ― they physically are in a different spot right now.”
