AL VFD Gets Surprise Letter: Check for Pumper Purchase Refunded, Equipment Donated

Recently, the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department began looking to purchase a pumper to be placed at its second station that is currently under construction, the department said in a Facebook post May 23.

After much searching, several members traveled to Delaware to inspect an engine listed for sale for $12,500 by the Holloway Terrace Fire Company. Shortly thereafter, both departments entered into an agreement for the purchase of the apparatus. The price agreed upon was $10,000.

Members of the Farmville department gathered Tuesday, May 21 to welcome the new apparatus to Alabama. While inspecting the truck after delivery, members found it to be fully stocked in all compartments and the cab with equipment donated from the Holloway Terrace Fire Company and a neighboring department, the Townsend Fire Company.

“We were beyond excited to receive the apparatus in a fully-equipped state,” the department said in the Facebook post.

“I would estimate that about $20,000 worth of equipment was given with the truck,” Chief Carson Stroud wrote in an email. “Everything but air packs and hose was left with the truck by Holloway Terrace, and the Townsend Fire Company gave about 1,200-feet of hose and three sets of HURST tools.”

Two days later, the Farmville department received a letter from the Holloway Terrace Fire Company stating that its membership and board of directors voted unanimously to donate the apparatus and refund the check for the purchase price back to the department.

“We are beyond grateful as a department to receive the apparatus that is in excellent shape, loaded with equipment, and have it all donated to us,” the department said. “Words cannot express our thanks to both the Holloway Terrace Fire Company and the Townsend Fire Company for their gracious donations. The apparatus and equipment served New Castle County, Delaware for many years and will go on to serve the citizens of Lee County for many more years to come.

“We are excited to start the process of training and lettering the truck to our specs so we can place it in service to serve our community.”
