Denton County Emergency Services District No. 1 introduced the newest addition to its fleet, the department said in a Facebook post Thursday, May 2.
The new Engine 513 is a Pierce pumper that will be housed out of Station 513 in Lantana. This new engine will replace an 11-year-old engine that will become a reserve unit.
The department held a special “push in” ceremony for the new pumper.
This is a fire service tradition that dates back to the late 1800s when fire departments used hand-drawn pumpers and horse-drawn equipment. Upon returning to the station after a fire call, horses could not easily back the equipment into the station; thus, requiring the firefighters to unhitch the horses from the fire equipment and then pushing the equipment back into the bays to prepare for the next alarm.
Since then, this tradition has become customary, as a symbol good luck, teamwork, and community pride, when placing a new fire truck in service.
Today’s push-in ceremony is a tribute to honoring our fire service history and to express our sincere gratitude for the strength and support of the communities we serve.
