PRESS RELEASE

BREDA, Iowa – In 1909, Big Spring was the first city in Texas to receive a motorized fire truck. That dedication to innovation continues today with the delivery of a Toyne pumper tanker-tender to the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department (HCVFD).

Protecting the 34,000 residents of Big Spring and surrounding communities, the volunteer fire department comprises 75 members across five stations. HCVFD provides various services including automobile extrication, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, fire suppression, fire prevention education, rescue, and more.

HCVFD tasked Toyne, Inc., a fire apparatus manufacturer based out of Breda, Iowa, to build a pumper tanker-tender to fit their needs. Mounted on a bolted painted stainless steel body, the new apparatus is powered by a Freightliner 114SD SBA 2-door chassis, a Cummins ISL9 450 horsepower engine, and an Allison 3000 EVS transmission.

Additional features include

  • Waterous CSU 1,500-gpm pump
  • Foam Pro 2002 Class B Foam System with 100-gallon tank
  • UPF 3,000-gallon tank
  • Zico hydraulic painted porta-tank rack
  • Syntex 3,000-gallon portable tank
  • ROM painted roll-up doors
  • Rear slide-in ladder and pike pole storage
  • Roll-out storage trays
  • Roll-out and swing-out tool boards
  • Custom rolled hose storage rack
  • And more

“Howard County covers a fair amount of ground in Texas and in turn provides a lot of support to area communities,” said Mike Schwabe, President of Toyne, Inc. “We’re grateful to be part of their process and to provide an apparatus to help support their efforts.”

Located along Interstate 20, the city of Big Spring, Texas lies 60 miles east of Odessa and 67 miles west of Sweetwater. The longstanding community is the county seat of Howard County, which was established in 1876.

Authorized Toyne Dealer First-In Public Safety Solutions sold the apparatus to HCVFD. Those interested in learning more about Toyne Tailored Apparatus can visit their official website at Toyne.com and follow the family-owned company on Facebook and Instagram.
