Johnston (SC) Upgrades Fire Pumper with $454K Grant

The Johnston (SC) Fire Department purchased a new pumper with a $454,545 Community Development Block Grant, according to a report published by Lakelands Connector.

The apparatus was ordered in 2019 to replace a 1973 model and was delivered last Friday (Aug. 5), according to the report. One of the most appreciated features is the automatic transmission, according to the report, as the previous apparatus has a manual transmission and many of the younger firefighters are not familiar with it’s operation.

Other features include an enclosed ladder compartment LED lights and lots of diamond plate, and a larger pump and tank, according to the report, which added that the town is hoping for improved insurance ratings because of the purchase.
