September 2007 Ferrara Inundator Posts Impressive Test Results The Inundator, a custom industrial pumper by Ferrara Fire Apparatus, achieved impressive results during recent Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing. The unit tested at 3,000 gpm from draft, according to Ferrara. When supplied by other apparatus or a sufficient hydrant system, the Inundator’s three fixed monitors can flow up to 8,000 gpm. The apparatus is designed for use at refineries and petrochemical facilities. Built on Ferrara’s Igniter custom cab and chassis, the Inundator is available with aluminum or stainless steel bodies. Many – such as one built for Flint Hills Resources, Corpus Christi, Texas – have Detroit Diesel Series 60 515 hp engines and Hale 8FG 3,000 gpm pumps with a Williams Ambassador 4,000 gpm remote control monitor above the pump panel and twin TFT Monsoon 2,000 gpm remote control monitors, one at each side at the rear of the body. The unit sold to Flint Hills Resources has four 6-inch discharges, a 1,000-gallon foam tank and a Williams Hot Shot II balanced pressure foam system. Williams Fire & Hazard is an internationally recognized expert not only in design and manufacturing of fire suppression equipment, but also in the field of industrial fire suppression, according to Ferrara. The entire plumbing system is fabricated from high-quality stainless steel and features hinged left and right side pump panels and removable top mount panels for unparalleled service access. Brad Williamson, industrial product manager at Ferrara Fire Apparatus said the flow testing was quite a sight to behold. “The primary monitor is a Williams Fire & Hazard Ambassador, which has a flow capacity of 4,000 gpm,” Williamson said. “The monitor is plumbed with an 8-inch full-flow valve and piping and has a wireless remote control device that allows the operator to seek a better vantage point when directing the stream. The Ambassador’s master stream will travel up to 450 feet.” In addition to Flint Hills Resources, recent deliveries of industrial apparatus by Ferrara include: Chevron Phillips Chemical, Baytown, Texas; Citgo Petroleum, Sulfur, La.; Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, Ind.; Placid Refining, North Port Allen, La.; Union Carbide-Dow Chemical, Hahnville, La.; and Shell Petrochemical, Guangdong Province, China. Ferrara, based in Holden, La., builds a complete line of fire apparatus in addition to the Inundator. Other products include the Inferno XD and Igniter custom chassis, the Strong Arm fire-rescue vehicle, pumpers and tankers, rear and mid-mount aerial ladders and platforms.
