Thorogood Bunker Boot Provides Lightweight Protection
Thorogood Shoes, a leader in fire, rescue, uniform and safety footwear, has developed a lighter weight option for both men and women with its 14-inch bunker boot.
At a glance, the obvious difference of this particular bunker boot is the trademarked ADVANCE shaft made of a flame and puncture-resistant, lightweight Kevlar/Nomex combination, according to the company, but the real difference is on the inside.
The ULTI-MET meets and exceeds the new National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Utility Rescue and Recovery 2007 standard (formerly USAR). Increased protection has been added without adding any significance in weight or lack of mobility during the heat of the battle, the manufacturer said.
The ULTI-MET will be dual certified for both Structural and URR in the fall of 2007, and according to the company, no other 14-inch bunker boot maker can make that claim.
The ULTI-MET features the latest advancement on the classic performance-style firefighting boot –Thorogood’s patented pending I-MET technology – a breakthrough in polymer metatarsal protection that’s completely integrated with the tempered steel-toe cap, according to the manufacturer.
Built for complete instep protection during some of the job’s most challenging moments, like auto extrications or falling equipment, ULTI-MET naturally flexes with the foot to maintain comfort while providing protection. It’s also cushioned with memory foam to help absorb impact.
The new footwear also has an L-Protection mid-sole layer made from a flexible, puncture-resisting technology. It replaces the typical inflexible steel puncture plate found in most boots. The new breakthrough material is designed to be a safe, lightweight alternative to steel and will aid in the full range of foot motion to enhance a firefighter’s performance, according to Thorogood.
High performance Vibram rubber toe and heel caps endure abrasive environments and help extend the boot life, the manufacturer said.
The boot also features a steel triple ladder shank for superior arch support and cushioned shin guard. And it is lined with proven Comfort Weave/Sympatex barrier for waterproof protection that is blood borne pathogen compliant. The ULTI-MET boot meets or exceeds all NFPA and CSA requirements.
